Project no.2

This year, BA3 students started their final design unit with a two-week competition titled Existenzminimum (i.e. subsistence dwelling), which is a  concept that was explored by the main representatives of the Functionalism in Germany, immediately after World War 1. Today, we are still designing (and living) according to many of the housing standard experimented in those years in social housing schemes.

The final design unit will explore future models of living. Therefore, in order for the students to familiarise with this concept, the competition asked them to design a family house with a minimal footprint of 3x5m (in line with the idea of the Existenzminimum concept) and to build a cardboard model of the house. The competition was hugely successful and students built remarkable models that filled one of our 3rd floor studio space. Models were not only showing the great model-making skills of our students but also an attitude to critically evaluate our current standards of living and to forecast new directions for residential typologies. - Plamena 2017
