Biomimetic Collective Housing - ideasforward 24Hour competition

Jack Francis - 3rd place winning proposal
'A LIVING RESILIENCE' is the end product for a competition hosted by ideasforward, in their 24Hour architectural competition. The brief called for a radical re-thinking of collective housing, inspired by nature.

An idea of 'resilience' emerged as being appropriate in a world suffering from climate change and over populated cityscapes. New contexts need to be found for development, as cities expand onto fertile agricultural lands, taking away our capacity to feed ourselves effectively.
The great expanses of coniferous/pine forests across the globe, with their acidic soil, means that they are left barren due to them not being able to be farmed. Yet we still continue to expand our cities onto land that can be harvested effectively, a seemingly self-destructive process.

'A LIVING RESILIENCE' takes the form and abilities of the pine-cone, a natural inhabitant of these coniferous forests. An outer shell of the building is formed, based around the Fibonacci Sequence that dictates the pine-cone's natural shape. The structures 'needles' open and close as the pine-cone's does, reacting to the temperature and lighting of its context, allowing for a highly adaptive building that responds to its environment to protect its inhabitants. This allows for the more extreme environmental conditions of coniferous forests to become habitable for humans on a large scale.
